Let's be honest. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) is hard.

There are lots of business problems to solve, and the whole point of an ERP system is unification and integration. It’s easy to dismiss ERP as a legacy holdover of the 80s and 90s, but that would be a mistake. There are many ERP vendors in the world, including xTuple, and we are all trying to solve some of...

Let's talk about your goals for 2016

What would be some fantastic goals to set for the new year?

Are you considering new software? Do you work under a “corporate” umbrella which means that your month-end close just got reduced to five (5) days total? Are you a privately-owned company, but want to put procedures and policies in place to ensure the assets...

The supply chain is getting a lot smarter, thanks to the Internet of Things (IoT). This added intelligence results in lower costs and added efficiency for companies like General Motors and Whirlpool.

It's annual holiday party time at xTuple, and this year the "Ugly Sweater" award goes to CEO Ned Lilly (even though it was technically a vest, and a handsome one at that)! The Ugly Sweater contest dovetailed nicely with a fun product innovation from xTuple customer Brand Castle. Their famous "Grandma's Ugly Christmas sweaters" are a cookie-maker's delight and a popular choice for this holiday season! Ned's daughters made the cookies and decorated them just in time for the xTuple holiday party!

There are a diverse range of free software solutions for accounting. Personally, I have been tracking my personal and business accounts using a double-entry accounting system since I started doing freelance work about the same time I started university. Our bundle of joy started life as the "xTuple Web Portal.” It connected a website front-end to the ERP back-end. Then customers started asking us to add eCommerce/shopping cart functionality — for both B2B and B2C sales. After all, who doesn't want to sell more stuff online? But, it's so much more than that!

It seems like a different era, but I vividly remember the excitement my wife and I felt when thinking about names for our two girls. We decided to keep it a mystery, so we had lists of both boy and girl names. Lots of discussion ensued — as anyone who's been in that happy situation can certainly confirm.

We're going through something similar here at xTuple. We already know quite a bit...

So a handful of us got together a week or so ago to fix some bugs. No big deal, right? Actually it was.

Five xTuple partners and I met at erpDevelopers' worldwide headquarters in Chicago — many thanks to Jeff and Rob for their warm hospitality. We sat around a conference table for three (3) days and nights , collaborating and hacking. A few had done this before; others were fairly new...

In a business applications world made up of giants, xTuple is a small open source ERP player. Though it may not have the brand power of an Oracle or SAP, the company's small size and open source foundations make it exceptionally nimble and able to innovate, which is something of an oddity in the ERP realm. Having built out its mobile credentials over the past few...

Historically, manufacturers have avoided the adoption of Web technology, especially business-to-business (B2B) eCommerce, into their business plan. Manufacturing is known for its complexities and unique intricacies in planning, workflow, distribution and communications. Until recently, cost effective technology was not available to help manufacturers grow online.

However, times are...

Last month I attended the association for operations management ( APICS ) conference in Las Vegas. It’s been a while since I exhibited at that show — partly because trade shows in general have been slipping downward on a slow decline since the early 2000s. Trades shows have always been a great way for companies like us to meet customers and prospects face-to-face and hear from the "horse's...
